     A web hosting company is a company which an individual or company pays to host their web site for them.  The benefit to this is the the individual does not need to concern themselves with security issues and other like issue nearly as much as they would if they attempted to host their site themselves.  (Though when using a web hosting company, you should still take precautionary security measures as possible.)
     There are many companies which offer hosting options, but not all companies are equal.  The companies listed on this site have all maintained an internet presence for a fair deal of time and are considered reputable by many in the industry.  No two companies are alike, and some appeal to certain people, while others appeal to other people.  The web hosting company you decide to use should offer the tools you want, at a price you can afford.  As a minor aside, from personal experience, I would suggest using a web hosting company that uses a color scheme which you both like and can stand.  It is annoying to realize that you just contracted yourself with a company for a year or more and you will now be looking at hideous colors every time you log in to change your site.
